The Wheeler Company is a management consulting operation primarily focusing on professional sports, motorsports and general business.
H. A. "Humpy" Wheeler, a member of nine Halls of Fame including the International Motorsports, will serve as chairman. The company includes Wheeler’s son, Trip, who serves as president and Humpy’s daughter, Patti, owner of Wheeler TV.
The company's main focus is on creating highly unique racing for television and working with clients who have a need for innovation. The Wheeler Company also works with major drivers in assistance with their careers as well as tracks, sanctioning bodies and companies involved in racing.
Wheeler’s background is one of legend. After graduating from the University of South Carolina where he played football and was a championship amateur boxer, he operated dirt race tracks and then worked for The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company where he became Director of Racing. He took over Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1975 where he became known for his promotions and unique pre-race shows.
He became president of Speedway Motorsports (SMI) in 1994 when it became the first public company in racing to join the New York Stock Exchange. SMI owned Bristol, Lowes, Sears Point, Texas, Atlanta, New Hampshire and Kentucky Speedways when Wheeler retired in May, 2008. He also developed Legends Cars, the first successful attempt at mass producing race cars in history, in l992. More than 4,000 have been sold across the world. He later created the Bandelero and Thunder Car.
Patti Wheeler owns Wheeler TV and assists in a variety of support roles. Her company, Wheeler TV, is an Emmy award-winning company that does production for major network sports telecasts as well as documentaries and special features.
Son Trip is a graduate of Davidson College and was the first person to sell in car camera advertising in racing while a sales representative for World Sports Enterprises. Trip has served in a variety of sales and marketing positions since with GMR, Creative Sports and Velocity. He has worked with many top companies in racing including Gillette where he helped introduce the Young Guns program, ConAgra Foods and Visa.
